Clear can chip, flake, and dull, plus I think it takes away from the shine of bare aluminum, so mine have no paint on them. I don't drive the car much, but the shine seems to hold up pretty well. Once every few months I may get after them with some aluminum polish, but I don't really mind that at all. Henry
